The Pasta Tree, written and illustrated by Denbigh Sale is a delightful story about an emu called Mango and a little boy called Nino. They meet and travel to some iconic Australian places including The Devil’s Marbles, Uluru and The Great Barrier Reef. They climb into the clouds where they have a pasta party. An angel tells them “if you extend your spaghetti ladder, you might arrive in Italy – the country of Nino’s birth.” On the way Mango told Nino “If it’s night-time in Australia, then it’s daytime in Italy. They visit Rome, Sienna and Venice – “What a strange city!” cried Mango, “All the streets are made of water.” In Pisa, Mango saw the leaning tower. “I must hold it up before it falls,” said Mango.
The Googling Roo From Walladbadoo, written and illustrated by Denbigh Sale is a delightful story about a kangaroo called Red and his friend, Lou Lou who discover an old computer in a shed. Red starts googling questions and very soon all his farmyard friends want to ask many questions. An exhausted Red decides to take a holiday. Whoosh! Red finds himself roller blading around the rings of Saturn. What an adventure! He meets Asterisks, strange moon creatures and bull ants. Many interesting facts that relate to the beautiful illustrations are also included for additional enjoyment.
Several years ago my then tutor and friend, John Santry, gave me a red florentine style sketch book. On the first page he had written this quote by Tintoretto: “Beautiful colours are for sale in the shops on the Rialto, but good drawing can only be fetched from the casket of the artist’s talent with patient study and sleepless nights and understood and practiced by few.” And so began my collection, put together over many years; not of sketches but quotes by famous artists. Ones I found to be both thought-provoking and inspirational. By bringing some of these together in this sketchbook, I am hoping they will also be an inspiration for you. Denbigh Sale.
